Washington, DC--Today, the House Appropriations Committee passed by a 26-19 vote the Interior and Environment Appropriations bill. The bill would slash EPA’s budget by about a fifth for fiscal year 2013, the lowest it has been funded since 1998 and deeply cut funding for other environmental programs including the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a program that provides critical resources for protecting national parks, wildlife refuges and local recreation areas.
Colorado conservation groups supporting clean air safeguards announced they have collected almost 50,000 comments from Coloradans and a record two million nationwide in support of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Carbon Pollution Standard. The proposed rule, which seeks to limit industrial carbon pollution from new power plants, received more public comments than any other in the agency’s history.
It’s been five years since the Colorado legislature passed a law, HB 07-1037, which directed the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to develop energy efficiency goals and incentives for the state’s investor-owned utilities including Xcel Energy Inc. and Black Hills Energy Corporation. As a result, the electric utilities invested $166 million in efficiency programs for their business and residential customers. In hindsight, was it worth it?
